And an added message to all retirees:  PAY ATTENTION!!

As I get older, I find it harder and harder to pay attention! My mind wanders and I wonder what it was I had intended to do when I began something else!  That is the funny part of growing older, but there is a serious side as well.

I am struck by our new need to pay very close attention!!!

When I started teaching in 1966, most of my students could look forward to a rather secure employment future if they stayed in the Dayton area.  There were many places for them to work including Inland, Delco, NCR and Wright Patterson.  We paid little attention to these organizations and look what happened when we weren't looking!! Three of them, as well as several others, vanished! Who would have ever thought that could happen?

We, also, all thought that our retirement system was as secure as the gold in Fort Knox! Our country is in a financial crisis and is therefore, looking everywhere to shore up America's long-term debt.  It is time for us to pay attention!

The young teachers I speak with don't believe that they will have a retirement system as we know it today.I really was not paying close attention and didn't give a thought to how dangerously close we are to making that a reality until I joined MCRTA.

Having our close contact with STRS and our legislators through MCRTA HAS HELPED TO WAKE ME UP TO REALITY! We could actually lose our benefits!! PLEASE, tell everyone you know that we are NOT living off of the backs of tax payers.  We have paid into our retirement during our working years.  The defined benefit plan ( that I started paying into in 1966) and the good investments made by STRS are paying for my retirement now.

Please, help protect it for our future teachers, as well as for ourselves, by paying attention and by telling everyone you know that this plan is vastly better than the defined contribution system that is being discussed as a better option.  If you doubt it, read the full report entitled Decisions, Decisions: Retirement Plan Choices for Public Employees at: http://www.nirsonline.org/storage/nirs/documents/Decisions%20Decisions/final decisions decisions report.pdf/

My plea to you is to, please, PAY ATTENTION! Stay engaged by staying current and in touch with your legislators through MCRTA! It is important now and for the future!

Sincerely,
Carolyn Wheeler, MCRTA President, 2011-2012
