Community Service Projects: The Shoe Fund and The Mitten Tree
The Board of the Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association established the Shoe Fund and the Mitten Tree as their community service projects in 1984. As active teachers and principals, many MCRTA members provided not only for the educational needs of their students but also for their physical and financial needs.
The MCRTA Board and members of the MCRTA are fully committed to continue to serve the most needy children in the community. They set up the Shoe Fund to buy shoes for needy children. Solicitations are made in the November newsletter and collections are by mail or in person at the December meeting.Over the years, members have been very generous with their donations.
The Shoe Fund has provided more than 1400 pairs of shoes at a cost in excess of $35,000 to needy children in Dayton and Montgomery County elementary schools.
During 2005, members donated $2,793 to the Shoe Fund and we purchased 64 pairs of shoes for needy students.
During 2008, we have paid 260 vouchers @ $40 each, totalling $10,400 donated for children in need of shoes or boots. MCRTA was recognized by ORTA for this outstanding donation .

The Mitten Tree is erected at the December meeting. It is a handcrafted wooden tree that provides the structure for members to hang mittens, hats, scarves, gloves, socks, stuffed toys etc... that are distributed to local shelters that house children.
In 2011, we collected almost 200 pairs of gloves, over 100 pair of socks, 80 hats and 16 scarves and scarf sets which were donated to local shelters in the Montgomery County area.
Thanks to you, this has all been possible. Thank you for caring enough to share.
